Multiplication Basics
Multiplication is like repeated addition!
When we multiply, we're adding the same number multiple times. For example, 4 × 3 means 4 + 4 + 4 = 12.
The numbers we multiply are called factors, and the answer is called the product.
Key Multiplication Strategies
1️⃣ Memorize your times tables up to 12×12
2️⃣ Use the distributive property (e.g., 6×13 = 6×10 + 6×3)
3️⃣ Practice with real-world word problems
Practice Examples
Example 1: The Cookie Jar Challenge
Mrs. Baker has 8 jars, and each jar contains 15 cookies. How many cookies does she have in total?
Think about how you would solve this:
We multiply the number of jars by cookies per jar: 8 × 15
Break it down: (8 × 10) + (8 × 5) = 80 + 40 = 120 cookies!
Example 2: Video Game Points
In your favorite game, you earn 7 points for each alien you defeat. If you defeated 24 aliens, how many points did you earn?
Multiply points per alien by number defeated: 7 × 24
Break it down: (7 × 20) + (7 × 4) = 140 + 28 = 168 points!
