Understanding Fraction to Decimal Conversion
Fractions and decimals are two ways to show the same value!
A fraction like 1/2 means "1 divided by 2," which equals 0.5 in decimal form. We can convert fractions to decimals by dividing the numerator (top number) by the denominator (bottom number). Some fractions convert to nice, simple decimals, while others might go on forever!
How to Convert Fractions to Decimals
1️⃣ Divide the numerator by the denominator
2️⃣ Use long division if the numbers don't divide evenly
3️⃣ Round if the decimal goes on forever (like 1/3 = 0.333...)
Let's Practice Together!
Example 1: Simple Conversion
Convert 3/4 to a decimal:
Think: 3 ÷ 4 = ?
3 ÷ 4 = 0.75
Great job! 3/4 = 0.75
Example 2: Trickier Conversion
Convert 2/3 to a decimal (round to 2 decimal places):
Think: 2 ÷ 3 = ?
2 ÷ 3 = 0.666... ≈ 0.67
Awesome! 2/3 ≈ 0.67 when rounded
Parent Tips 🌟
- Kitchen Math: Use measuring cups to show how 1/2 cup (0.5) and 3/4 cup (0.75) relate to decimals.
- Money Matters: Connect fractions to money - a quarter is 1/4 dollar or $0.25.
- Game Time: Play "Fraction-Decimal Match" by writing fractions on some cards and their decimal equivalents on others, then have your child find matches.
