What Are Inequalities?
Inequalities show us how numbers relate to each other!
Just like a balance scale, inequalities tell us when one side is greater than (>), less than (<), or equal to (=) the other side. When we add or subtract the same number from both sides, the inequality stays balanced!
How to Solve Inequalities
1️⃣ Read the inequality carefully
2️⃣ Add or subtract the same number from both sides
3️⃣ Keep the inequality sign pointing the same way
Let's Practice Together!
Example 1: Addition Inequality
If we know that 5 > 3, what happens when we add 2 to both sides?
5 + 2 = 7 and 3 + 2 = 5
7 > 5 is still true! The inequality stays balanced.
Example 2: Subtraction Inequality
If we know that 8 < 12, what happens when we subtract 3 from both sides?
8 - 3 = 5 and 12 - 3 = 9
5 < 9 is still true! The inequality stays balanced.
Parent Tips 🌟
- Use real-life examples: Compare quantities like candies or toys to make inequalities more concrete.
- Play inequality games: Create simple card games where players compare numbers with inequality signs.
- Check understanding: Ask your child to explain why adding the same number to both sides doesn't change the inequality.
