Multiplying Fractions is Fun!
When we multiply fractions, we're finding a part of a part!
Imagine you have half a pizza, and you eat half of that half. That's the same as multiplying ½ × ½ = ¼. We multiply the numerators (top numbers) and denominators (bottom numbers) separately.
How to Multiply Fractions
1️⃣ Multiply the numerators (top numbers)
2️⃣ Multiply the denominators (bottom numbers)
3️⃣ Simplify your answer if needed
Let's Try Some Examples!
Example 1: Visual Multiplication
What is \(\frac{2}{3} \times \frac{3}{4}\)?
First fraction: 2/3
Second fraction: 3/4
When we multiply them, we're finding 2/3 of 3/4:
\(\frac{2}{3} \times \frac{3}{4} = \frac{6}{12} = \frac{1}{2}\)
Example 2: Chocolate Bar Fractions
You have \(\frac{3}{5}\) of a chocolate bar, and you want to share \(\frac{2}{3}\) of your portion with your friend. How much of the whole chocolate bar are you sharing?
You're sharing \(\frac{2}{3}\) of \(\frac{3}{5}\):
\(\frac{2}{3} \times \frac{3}{5} = \frac{6}{15} = \frac{2}{5}\)
So you're sharing \(\frac{2}{5}\) of the whole chocolate bar!
Parent Tips 🌟
- Use real objects: Cut fruits or pizzas to show fraction multiplication visually. "If we have half an apple and take three-fourths of that half, how much do we have?"
- Relate to everyday situations: "If you watch 2/3 of your 1/2 hour TV time, how many minutes is that?"
- Make it a game: Create fraction multiplication flashcards and race to solve them, rewarding correct answers with small treats.
