Measurement Basics
Measurement helps us understand the world around us!
We measure length, weight, volume, and time to compare things and solve problems. Let's review the important concepts you've learned about measurement.
Length
Length tells us how long or tall something is. We can measure in centimeters (cm), meters (m), inches (in), or feet (ft).
Weight
Weight tells us how heavy something is. We measure in grams (g), kilograms (kg), ounces (oz), or pounds (lbs).
Volume
Volume tells us how much space something takes up. We measure in milliliters (mL), liters (L), cups, or gallons.
Let's Practice Measurement!
Example 1: Measuring Around the House
Find these items in your home and measure them:
- Your math book (length and width)
- A water bottle (capacity)
- Your favorite toy (weight)
Example 2: Conversion Challenge
Let's practice converting measurements:
1 meter = ___ centimeters
1 kilogram = ___ grams
1 liter = ___ milliliters
Parent Tips 🌟
- Cooking together is a great way to practice measurement - let your child measure ingredients for recipes.
- Create a measurement scavenger hunt where your child finds objects of specific lengths or weights around the house.
- Compare measurements during everyday activities like grocery shopping ("Which cereal box is taller?").
