What is Area?
Area is how much space a flat shape takes up!
When we talk about the area of squares and rectangles, we're measuring how many square units fit inside them. It's like counting how many tiles would cover a floor!
Square
Area = Side × Side
\( A = s \times s \)
Rectangle
Area = Length × Width
\( A = l \times w \)
How to Find Area
1️⃣ Measure the length of one side (for squares) or both sides (for rectangles)
2️⃣ Multiply the measurements together
3️⃣ Don't forget to include units (like cm² or m²)!
Let's Practice!
Example 1: Tiling a Playroom
Sarah wants to tile her square playroom floor. Each side of the room is 4 meters long.
What is the area of Sarah's playroom?
Example 2: Covering a Book
Tom needs to cover his rectangular textbook. The book is 25 cm long and 20 cm wide.
How much cover paper does he need?
Parent Tips 🌟
- Real-world practice: Measure rooms, books, or tiles at home to calculate their areas together.
- Visual learning: Use graph paper to draw squares and rectangles, then count the squares inside.
- Game approach: Create a "design a bedroom" game where your child calculates floor space for furniture.
