Add & Subtract Fractions with Like Denominators

Making fractions fun and easy to understand!

Understanding Like Denominators

Fractions with the same denominator are like pieces of the same pie!
When fractions have the same denominator (the bottom number), it means they're divided into the same number of equal parts. This makes adding and subtracting them super easy!

How to Add & Subtract Fractions

1️⃣ Keep the denominator the same

2️⃣ Add or subtract the numerators (top numbers)

3️⃣ Simplify if needed (make the fraction as small as possible)

Let's Practice Together!

Example 1: Adding Fractions

Jenny ate \(\frac{2}{8}\) of a pizza and her brother ate \(\frac{3}{8}\) of the same pizza. How much did they eat together?

\(\frac{2}{8}\) + \(\frac{3}{8}\)

\(\frac{2}{8} + \frac{3}{8} = \frac{2+3}{8} = \frac{5}{8}\)

Example 2: Subtracting Fractions

Sam had \(\frac{7}{10}\) of a chocolate bar. He shared \(\frac{4}{10}\) with his friend. How much does he have left?

\(\frac{7}{10}\) - \(\frac{4}{10}\)

\(\frac{7}{10} - \frac{4}{10} = \frac{7-4}{10} = \frac{3}{10}\)

Parent Tips 🌟

  • Use real-life examples: Cut fruits, pizzas, or chocolate bars to demonstrate fractions visually.
  • Make it a game: Create fraction cards and have your child match addition/subtraction problems with their answers.
  • Practice with baking: Measuring ingredients is a perfect opportunity to work with fractions!
