What is Decimal Subtraction?
Subtracting decimals is just like subtracting whole numbers, but with an extra special dot!
The decimal point helps us keep track of whole numbers (to the left) and parts of numbers (to the right). When we subtract decimals, we always line up the decimal points first - this keeps everything in the right place!
How to Subtract Decimals
1️⃣ Line up the decimal points (use graph paper if needed)
2️⃣ Subtract each column starting from the right
3️⃣ Bring down the decimal point in your answer
Let's Practice Together!
Example 1: Cookie Money
Emma has $5.75 and wants to buy a cookie for $2.50. How much money will she have left?
Example 2: Race Times
Liam ran 100 meters in 15.8 seconds. His friend ran it in 14.95 seconds. What's the difference in their times?
