What Does "Without Regrouping" Mean?
Great news! This is the easiest kind of subtraction!
When we subtract a one-digit number from a two-digit number without regrouping, it means we don't need to borrow from the tens place. The ones digit in the bigger number is already large enough to subtract the smaller number!
How to Subtract Without Regrouping
1️⃣ Look at the tens place - it stays the same!
2️⃣ Subtract the ones digits - just like normal!
3️⃣ Write your answer - tens digit first, then the new ones digit!
Let's Practice Together!
Example 1: 45 - 3
Step 1: The tens digit (4) stays the same!
Step 2: Subtract the ones: 5 - 3 = 2
Step 3: Put them together: 4 (tens) and 2 (ones) makes 42!
Example 2: 78 - 6
Let's try another one! Can you solve 78 - 6?
Hint: The tens digit stays the same. Just subtract the ones!
Here's how we do it:
7 (tens) stays as 7
8 (ones) - 6 = 2
Put them together: 72! You're getting so good at this!
Parent Tips 🌟
- Use real objects - Count out 25 pennies, then take away 3 to show how the tens digit stays the same.
- Number line practice - Draw a number line from 20-30 and have your child hop backward for problems like 28-5.
- Make it a game - Write problems on index cards and have your child sort them into "needs regrouping" and "no regrouping" piles.
