What Are Growing Patterns?
Growing patterns are sequences where each step gets bigger or changes in a
predictable way!
Just like plants grow taller or you grow bigger shoes each year, numbers and shapes can grow in patterns
too. We can find these patterns everywhere - in nature, in games, and even in our toys!
How to Spot Growing Patterns
1️⃣ Look at the first few items in the sequence
2️⃣ Find what changes each time (more dots? bigger shapes?)
3️⃣ Predict what comes next using the pattern rule
Let's Explore Growing Patterns!
Example 1: Shape Growing Pattern
Look at this pattern of squares. Can you guess what comes next?

The next square should have 4 rows: 1, 2, 3, and 4 numbers! The pattern grows by adding one more row each time.
Example 2: Flower Petal Pattern
Watch how the flower grows more petals each day! Click the button to see the next day.
The pattern rule: Each day, the flower grows 2 more petals than the day before!
Parent Tips 🌟
- Pattern hunt: Look for growing patterns together in everyday life - stairs, tree branches, or even how cookies are arranged on a tray!
- Building blocks: Use toys like blocks or LEGO to create growing patterns together (1 block, then 3, then 5...).
- Clapping game: Make sound patterns that grow (clap once, then twice, then three times) and have your child continue the pattern.
