Subtraction Sentences

Taking away to find what's left!

What Are Subtraction Sentences?

Subtraction is like sharing cookies or giving away toys - it shows how many are left after some are taken away.
A subtraction sentence has three parts: the starting number (minuend), the number being taken away (subtrahend), and the difference (what's left). We write it like this: 5 - 2 = 3

How to Solve Subtraction Sentences

1️⃣ Count the total: Start with all the items

2️⃣ Take away: Remove the number being subtracted

3️⃣ Count what's left: That's your answer!

  • Make it a game: Play "store" where your child "buys" items with subtraction
  • Relate to daily life: "We had 6 cookies. You ate 2. How many are left?"
